I Said....and Then My Body Said....

Do you ever have a conversation with your body?

This weekend I was in a group where we all shared "10 weird things about me"- and one of the things on the list for me was that I often talk to my body.

I actually loved us sharing like this because most, if not all, things shared were things that...

  • Some people might think are weird....
  • And that maybe we even used to think were weird....
  • But now we can own those things about us....
  • And maybe even appreciate, love and/or find some good natured humor in our uniqueness.
  • And perhaps no longer consider to be weird.

For the record, when I first started this somatic journey, I did think that talking to my body was weird.

It felt foreign to be paying such close attention to my body - makes sense, I had been dissociated and running from my body for most of my life.

I thought it was normal to run from my body. Normal for me was to avoid anything that would help me understand my body. Normal to say I was always fine and happy.

That served me well then.

But now, the idea of NOT getting into my body seems foreign and the concept weird and out of sync with who I truly am. It is normal for me now, to pay attention to my body, to listen to her and let her speak.

I was in a class recently that said the following about Getting Into Your Body (also known as embodiment).....

I invite you to think of an embodiment practice as a conversation with your body.

You listen to your sensations, which allows you to respond with breath and movement.

Then you ask your body, "Did I get it right?"

Listen for feedback in the form of emotions, changes in sensation, or an overall sense of ease.

Notice if you have a tendency to be aggressive with yourself.

If you experience a stuck sensation, gently rest your attention there.

Ask this part of your body what it needs from you.

Allow your curiosity to help you listen more deeply.

These are conversations I have regularly.

And It could be considered weird and I Love it and Embrace all of it!

How about you?

Do you have conversations with your body?

Does it serve you in your healing?

Here are 3 reasons it serves me....

These conversations help me because then my body can lead me to what it's ready to heal and release next.

It can lead me to resources within and resources externally that help me heal. Ones that resonate.

And my body, mind, and spirit love being reclaimed together in this "coming back home" to my body that these conversations provide.

My body is my own.

My trauma narrative told me it didn't belong to me.

Now I don't just want to believe my body is my own.....It really is.

It feels true to my whole self, body, mind, and heart.

And a big reason for that happening is these conversations with my body.

Do you have a weird thing that helps you heal?

I'd love to hear about it.

You can reach me on my socials or respond to this email.

You Matter. Your Healing Matters. You Are Worth It!

Not Every Tool Works Every Time Series Continued... This is the last week of this series. Over the course of this last month we’ve talked about when different bottom up tools don’t work and what to do. When.... Meditation Vagal Stimulation Noticing Sensations Don't Work. I also shared what to do when Trauma Education doesn’t work. And today, I’d like to share what to do when the Sideways tool doesn’t work. Sideways means the watcher. It’s how we view our trauma triggers in our body and all...

Not Every Tool Works Every Time Series Continued... Learning about trauma can be really helpful. In fact, trauma education is on my list of Top Down tools because it can explain why we act certain ways. When trauma takes over, we can understand that we are not crazy, we’re just reacting to what happened to us. And, even if other people don’t get it, learning about trauma can be a way to help them understand us better. But it’s important to remember, we’re not learning about trauma to convince...

Not Every Tool Works Every Time Series Continued... In the work of healing trauma, I often invite others (and myself) to notice different things in our body. To notice, means to pay attention. To turn inward. I share something and offer a noticing practice by asking you to notice what is happening in your body.... Or notice what is not happening.... And notice what your mind or heart might be doing.... And notice your breath.... This is a short list of things we could notice. And any of these...
