What We See In a Reflection....

Published 2 months ago • 2 min read

I want to talk about the power of reflection today.

What comes to mind when I offer this?

I invite you to think on - reflect on - (see what I did there? Hee).....What comes up?

Is there an image of a lake with the reflection of trees, the sky, and clouds?

Is there an image of friends or family?

Maybe a memory of fun moment or a hard moment over the last few days or today?

Reflections can be good, hard, neutral or all the above.....

Are there sensations that come into your body?

Or emotions or thoughts?

Perhaps you remember a song?

Maybe a sigh or inhale, exhale or pause come up in your body....

There so many ways to reflect and so many things that can come up.

Any of these can offer reminders of glimmers, which are those moments that we feel love, strength, healing, enjoyment or anything else that can offer us an internal resource for healing.

We can also reflect on parts of our trauma or parts of us that hold onto trauma and that can be a path we can choose to follow to release know what is next in our healing journey.

And we can also reflect and choose not to do any of that and just reflect and be present.

So much is available in this space.

This is why I see reflections as being so powerful in trauma recovery.

I also want to add another form of reflection, one I do everyday and find so helpful in healing.

In somatic work, it is when we have someone reflect back to us what they notice and see we are doing. This is offered as a way to notice and possibly gain awareness of what might be happening physically within our body.

And this is what I do with my clients every day.

Today I got to be the client during part of my Somatic EMDR certification.

I was asked if I noticed that I put my hand on my solar plexus while explaining my sensations and did I notice that I quickly moved it away....

My coach at the time, reflected the movement back to me and then asked if I wanted to put my hand back on my chest, near my solar plexus.

It was fascinating to me how - Yes, I did have awareness that I put my hand there, but I didn't notice the speed with which I moved it away.

And while watching her reflect back to me my movement, my answer to her question was, yes, I very much wanted to put my hand back on my chest and let it rest on my solar plexus.

As I did so, I felt tears rise to my eyes and I felt that I was seeing me in a new way.

It was beautiful.

I was reminded of the phrase from Ann, my inner child therapist, "Together we can heal what we cannot heal alone."

As I stayed with this new way of seeing I had a new understanding of how my body responded in a fawning state. One I wasn't aware of before and one that had been blocking some trauma I needed to release.

Thank you to that sweet coach willing to offer and reflect back to me a simple movement that opened a door to more of my healing.

Such was the power of somatic reflections for me today. I'm feeling grateful.

Powerful right?

I invite you to again notice some reflections because what we see or what others see and reflect back to us can be just what we need for our healing.

Remember, ❤️

You Matter. Your Healing Matters. You Are Worth It!

P.S. I'm doing an Instagram live, 3 day Challenge starting next week....I'd love for you to join me.

Not Every Tool Works Every Time Series Continued... This is the last week of this series. Over the course of this last month we’ve talked about when different bottom up tools don’t work and what to do. When.... Meditation Vagal Stimulation Noticing Sensations Don't Work. I also shared what to do when Trauma Education doesn’t work. And today, I’d like to share what to do when the Sideways tool doesn’t work. Sideways means the watcher. It’s how we view our trauma triggers in our body and all...

Not Every Tool Works Every Time Series Continued... Learning about trauma can be really helpful. In fact, trauma education is on my list of Top Down tools because it can explain why we act certain ways. When trauma takes over, we can understand that we are not crazy, we’re just reacting to what happened to us. And, even if other people don’t get it, learning about trauma can be a way to help them understand us better. But it’s important to remember, we’re not learning about trauma to convince...

Not Every Tool Works Every Time Series Continued... In the work of healing trauma, I often invite others (and myself) to notice different things in our body. To notice, means to pay attention. To turn inward. I share something and offer a noticing practice by asking you to notice what is happening in your body.... Or notice what is not happening.... And notice what your mind or heart might be doing.... And notice your breath.... This is a short list of things we could notice. And any of these...
