I want this to work...but...

Last week in my Get Into Your Body for a Minute Today practice, I shared alternate nostril breathing. (I share a practice each week on Instagram and Facebook and invite you to check them out if you haven't yet. You can find last week's Here.) This Pranayama (breath) practice was so fun for me to share because alternate nostril breathing is one that I have been drawn to throughout my healing..... And it's also always been one that has been so hard for me to do. Why so hard? And why keep trying...

Not Every Tool Works Every Time Series Continued... This is the last week of this series. Over the course of this last month we’ve talked about when different bottom up tools don’t work and what to do. When.... Meditation Vagal Stimulation Noticing Sensations Don't Work. I also shared what to do when Trauma Education doesn’t work. And today, I’d like to share what to do when the Sideways tool doesn’t work. Sideways means the watcher. It’s how we view our trauma triggers in our body and all...

Not Every Tool Works Every Time Series Continued... Learning about trauma can be really helpful. In fact, trauma education is on my list of Top Down tools because it can explain why we act certain ways. When trauma takes over, we can understand that we are not crazy, we’re just reacting to what happened to us. And, even if other people don’t get it, learning about trauma can be a way to help them understand us better. But it’s important to remember, we’re not learning about trauma to convince...

Not Every Tool Works Every Time Series Continued... In the work of healing trauma, I often invite others (and myself) to notice different things in our body. To notice, means to pay attention. To turn inward. I share something and offer a noticing practice by asking you to notice what is happening in your body.... Or notice what is not happening.... And notice what your mind or heart might be doing.... And notice your breath.... This is a short list of things we could notice. And any of these...

Not Every Tool Works Every Time Series Continued... Vagal Stimulation is a big thing right now. And I love it! Makes sense to me because there are lots of awesome tools included in what is called vagal stimulation. There are tools to stimulate the eyes, the ears, the face.... Try this Eye One Or this Eye One Or this Ear One Or this Facial Acupressure And these are only some of the tools. The vagus nerve is like a traveler. It's called the wandering nerve because it goes all over our body....

I’m reminded today of the shame/blame cycle and how I first learned this cycle from a coach of mine, Jody Moore. The concept is.... When we feel shame and it feels too scary to feel or we don't want to feel it, we often help ourselves no longer feel shame by blaming something external. Something outside of us that we have no control over. A person, place, situation.....anything that is not us. This way blame helps us avoid feeling our shame. And when we are feeling shame we so desperately...

I love to hear the ocean. To just sit and watch the waves and listen as they crash into the sand. There is a rhythm within the waves that is calming to my eyes and to my ears. It's a rhythm that is expected, majestic and untamed. I can't stop a wave from crashing, even if I wanted to. The power of a wave could be frightening in a storm, but when it's a beautiful day and I'm sitting in the sun, watching the waves, the power of it is inspiring. Watching the waves complete their energy cycles...

Do you ever have a conversation with your body? This weekend I was in a group where we all shared "10 weird things about me"- and one of the things on the list for me was that I often talk to my body. I actually loved us sharing like this because most, if not all, things shared were things that... Some people might think are weird.... And that maybe we even used to think were weird.... But now we can own those things about us.... And maybe even appreciate, love and/or find some good natured...

I want to talk about the power of reflection today. What comes to mind when I offer this? I invite you to think on - reflect on - (see what I did there? Hee).....What comes up? Is there an image of a lake with the reflection of trees, the sky, and clouds? Is there an image of friends or family? Maybe a memory of fun moment or a hard moment over the last few days or today? Reflections can be good, hard, neutral or all the above..... Are there sensations that come into your body? Or emotions or...

I remember when I first started healing back in 2019. I didn’t tell too many people, but the ones I did would often checkin and ask me how it was going…. I wanted to say...."All the things I’m doing are working and I can see a difference." "I’m not getting triggered". "When my kids yell or get stressed, I don’t get stressed or yell back, my complex trauma is all healed and I can calm down any activation in me. I hold space for them and it’s amazing." "When my husband wants to be intimate, I’m...
